Kejadian 2:1-25

2:1 The heavens and the earth were completed with everything that was in them. 2:2 By the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, and he ceased on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing. 2:3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he ceased all the work that he had been doing in creation.

The Creation of Man and Woman

2:4 This is the account of the heavens and

the earth 10  when they were created – when the Lord God 11  made the earth and heavens. 12

2:5 Now 13  no shrub of the field had yet grown on the earth, and no plant of the field 14  had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. 15  2:6 Springs 16  would well up 17  from the earth and water 18  the whole surface of the ground. 19  2:7 The Lord God formed 20  the man from the soil of the ground 21  and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 22  and the man became a living being. 23

2:8 The Lord God planted an orchard 24  in the east, 25  in Eden; 26  and there he placed the man he had formed. 27  2:9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, 28  every tree that was pleasing to look at 29  and good for food. (Now 30  the tree of life 31  and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 32  were in the middle of the orchard.)

2:10 Now 33  a river flows 34  from Eden 35  to

water the orchard, and from there it divides 36  into four headstreams. 37  2:11 The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through 38  the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 2:12 (The gold of that land is pure; 39  pearls 40  and lapis lazuli 41  are also there). 2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through 42  the entire land of Cush. 43  2:14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. 44  The fourth river is the Euphrates.

2:15 The Lord God took the man and placed 45  him in the orchard in 46  Eden to care for it and to maintain it. 47  2:16 Then the Lord God commanded 48  the man, “You may freely eat 49  fruit 50  from every tree of the orchard, 2:17 but 51  you must not eat 52  from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when 53  you eat from it you will surely die.” 54

2:18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. 55  I will make a companion 56  for him who corresponds to him.” 57  2:19 The Lord God formed 58  out of the ground every living animal of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would 59  name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 2:20 So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam 60  no companion who corresponded to him was found. 61  2:21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, 62  and while he was asleep, 63  he took part of the man’s side 64  and closed up the place with flesh. 65  2:22 Then the Lord God made 66  a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 2:23 Then the man said,

“This one at last 67  is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

this one will be called 68  ‘woman,’

for she was taken out of 69  man.” 70

2:24 That is why 71  a man leaves 72  his father and mother and unites with 73  his wife, and they become a new family. 74  2:25 The man and his wife were both naked, 75  but they were not ashamed. 76

Yakobus 1:1-27

Salutation

1:1 From James, 77  a slave 78  of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes dispersed abroad. 79  Greetings!

Joy in Trials

1:2 My brothers and sisters, 80  consider it nothing but joy 81  when you fall into all sorts of trials, 1:3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 1:4 And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything. 1:5 But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him. 1:6 But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind. 1:7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, 1:8 since he is a double-minded individual, 82  unstable in all his ways.

1:9 Now the believer 83  of humble means 84  should take pride 85  in his high position. 86  1:10 But the rich person’s pride should be in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a wildflower in the meadow. 87  1:11 For the sun rises with its heat and dries up the meadow; the petal of the flower falls off and its beauty is lost forever. 88  So also the rich person in the midst of his pursuits will wither away. 1:12 Happy is the one 89  who endures testing, because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God 90  promised to those who love him. 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, 91  and he himself tempts no one. 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires. 1:15 Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death. 1:16 Do not be led astray, my dear brothers and sisters. 92  1:17 All generous giving and every perfect gift 93  is from above, coming down 94  from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change. 95  1:18 By his sovereign plan he gave us birth 96  through the message of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Living Out the Message

1:19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! 97  Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. 1:20 For human 98  anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. 99  1:21 So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly 100  welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls. 1:22 But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves. 1:23 For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone 101  who gazes at his own face 102  in a mirror. 1:24 For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets 103  what sort of person he was. 1:25 But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, 104  and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out – he 105  will be blessed in what he does. 106  1:26 If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile. 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before 107  God the Father 108  is this: to care for orphans and widows in their misfortune and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Matius 7:1-29

Do Not Judge

7:1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 109  7:2 For by the standard you judge you will be judged, and the measure you use will be the measure you receive. 110  7:3 Why 111  do you see the speck 112  in your brother’s eye, but fail to see 113  the beam of wood 114  in your own? 7:4 Or how can you say 115  to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ while there is a beam in your own? 7:5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 7:6 Do not give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls before pigs; otherwise they will trample them under their feet and turn around and tear you to pieces. 116

Ask, Seek, Knock

7:7 “Ask 117  and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door 118  will be opened for you. 7:8 For everyone who asks 119  receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 7:9 Is 120  there anyone among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 7:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 121  7:11 If you then, although you are evil, 122  know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts 123  to those who ask him! 7:12 In 124  everything, treat others as you would want them 125  to treat you, 126  for this fulfills 127  the law and the prophets.

The Narrow Gate

7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 7:14 But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A Tree and Its Fruit

7:15 “Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves. 128  7:16 You will recognize them by their fruit. Grapes are not gathered 129  from thorns or figs from thistles, are they? 130  7:17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad 131  tree bears bad fruit. 7:18 A good tree is not able to bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree to bear good fruit. 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 7:20 So then, you will recognize them by their fruit.

Judgment of Pretenders

7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ 132  will enter into the kingdom of heaven – only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 7:22 On that day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons and do 133  many powerful deeds?’ 7:23 Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’ 134

Hearing and Doing

7:24 “Everyone 135  who hears these words of mine and does them is like 136  a wise man 137  who built his house on rock. 7:25 The rain fell, the flood 138  came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it had been founded on rock. 7:26 Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 7:27 The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!” 139

7:28 When 140  Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching, 7:29 because he taught them like one who had authority, 141  not like their experts in the law. 142
